Blackie Lawless (* 4. September 1956 as Steven Edward Duren ) is an American musician who in the 1980s as a singer and guitarist for the heavy metal band WASP became known.

biography

Blackie Lawless grew up in Staten Island , New York , NY with future Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley . He got his first guitar at the age of 9 and earned his first salary of $ 16 and 35 cents that same year with his first band, The Underside. During his school days Lawless was particularly noticeable for brawls; at 13 he was stabbed, at 14 he was sent to a military school. At the age of 16 he played in local bars on the American east coast with his band Black Rabbits. For some time he also played in a band called Orfax Rainbow. At the age of 18 he became the singer of the glam rock band New York Dolls after Johnny Thunders left. After six months and the end of the band, Blackie moved with the New York Dolls bassist Arthur Kane to Los Angeles and formed the Killer Kane Band . The band released a 7-inch, three-track EP that featured Blackie playing guitar and singing. On the back he is noted as "Blackie Gooseman". After the breakup, Kane moved back to New York while Lawless stayed in Los Angeles. In 1977 he founded the band Sister with Randy Piper , one of the first bands in Los Angeles to experiment with occult symbolism and make-up. During his time with the band, Lawless met Chris Holmes , whom he discovered through a picture in Hustler magazine. Since punk and new wave were popular at the time and heavy metal was not, the band gained a local following but did not spark the interest of the record companies and so the band split again shortly afterwards. In addition, Lawless also played at this time in London and Circus Circus .

Lawless stayed in touch with Piper and contacted him when he had enough material for a new band in 1982. Holmes and Tony Richards also joined. With a changing line-up, Lawless has released fifteen studio albums and several live recordings from 1984 until today. Although Blackie Lawless is not an actor, he has appeared in several films. He first appeared in the Village People film Can't Stop the Music in a minor supporting role in 1980 . Furthermore, Lawless can be seen in the 1984 Spinal Tap film This Is Spinal Tap and also in 1984 his band WASP played in the B horror movie Rulers of Hell (also known as The Dungeonmaster or Ragewars ). In 1987 he got an offer for the leading role in the horror film Ragman (original title: Trick or Treat ), in which Ozzy Osbourne (as a priest) and Gene Simmons (as a DJ) can be seen, but he declined the role. Lawless also auditioned for the role of T-1000 in Terminator 2 - Judgment Day . However, his height of 192 cm proved to be a problem. The role of the T-1000 was designed for an average size person who could hide in a crowd. Director James Cameron wanted to keep this to increase the dramatic effect of the T-1000.
