Marcantonio Amulio

Marcantonio Amulio also Marco Antonio Amulio or Marco Antonio Da Mula (* 1506 in Venice , † March 17, 1572 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Amulio came from a Venetian patrician family, he studied in Venice and Padua Law . He then was ambassador of the Republic of Venice to King Charles V and later Philip II of Spain, and finally also ambassador to the Holy See . The Pope wanted to appoint him Bishop of Verona , but the Republic of Venice contradicted this and called Amulio back to Venice. It was only after the Pope protested that he was reassigned to the post of ambassador.

Pope Pius IV , his uncle, created Marcantonio Amulio in the consistory of February 26, 1561 as cardinal deacon , he received the red hat and the title deaconry of San Marcello on March 10, 1561. On March 17 of the same year he was elevated to cardinal priest .

On November 23, 1562 Marcantonio Amulio was appointed Bishop of Rieti . From 1562 to 1563 he took part as a legate at the Council of Trent and immediately carried out its reforms in his own diocese . From 1565 to 1572 he was the librarian of the Roman Church . He stayed away from the conclave 1565–1566 , in which Pope Pius V was elected. Together with the Cardinals Giovanni Girolamo Morone and Alessandro Farnese the Younger , Marcantonio Amulio was commissioned to make all the necessary preparations to repel the Turks. He was also authorized together with Cardinal Michele Ghislieri to receive the creed of the Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East (Chaldean) Abdisho IV. Marron when he visited Rome to seek full communion with the Pope; this was an essential step in the creation of the Chaldean Catholic Church .

Marcantonio Amulio died in Rome in March 1572. His body was transferred to his hometown of Venice and buried there in the sacristy of the Franciscan Observant Church of San Giobbe .

Act

Marcantonio Amulio was an outstanding speaker and literary educated, he cultivated friendships with Pietro Bembo , Bernardo Tasso , Pietro Aretino , l'Aretino and Giangiorgio Trissino . In Prato della Valle , Padua , he founded the Collegio Amulio and the Compagnia del gran nome di Dio as an aid organization for orphans and children of the poor.
