Hear 'n Aid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hear 'n Aid was a benefit music project that was created in 1985 on the initiative of the American heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio . The original idea, however, is attributed to his bandmates Jimmy Bain and Vinnie Appice . The aim was to establish a comparable music project in the metal scene based on the example of the Band Aid project around Bob Geldof (1984) , the profits of which were to be donated to hunger and development aid.

According to Dios, the project is said to have raised $ 1 million within a year.

production

To achieve their goal, the musicians decided to release a record that should also contain a piece of music specially written for this purpose. While in Europe numerous pop musicians led by Bob Geldof as Band Aid with Do They Know It's Christmas? had already taken action in November 1984, the music world in the USA only reacted in January 1985, when USA for Africa emerged from an idea by Harry Belafonte . Since hard rock and heavy metal were also very popular at the time, in addition to pop music , the idea of helping out with artists from these genres was born.

On May 20 and 21, 1985, 40 prominent musicians from the heavy metal scene recorded the song Stars in the A&M Records studio in Hollywood . The song was written by the Dio musicians Vivian Campbell , Jimmy Bain and Ronnie James Dio and contains vocal and lead guitar contributions from numerous other prominent musicians, the choir was sung by all musicians involved.

The result was supposed to be published immediately after completion, but due to delays the record did not appear in stores until January 1, 1986. In addition to the single , an album entitled Hear 'n Aid - An All-Star Album For Famine Relief was released, which included stars as well as songs by other artists donated to a good cause.
