The Willi Busch Report is a German feature film from 1979.

action

The Cold War period . In the east of the Federal Republic of Germany, right on the border with the GDR . The siblings Adelheid and Wilhelm Busch inherited the legendary "Werra-Post" from their father. The once flourishing newspaper used to provide the whole Werra valley with news. But the circulation keeps falling. The reason is the new and soon insurmountable border that has arisen in Europe, which runs through the middle of Germany and through the Werra Valley. Just on the western side, the town of Friedheim has become a remote provincial nest. Almost nothing happened anymore. If the "Werra-Post" is to survive, something must finally happen again.

And so one day Wilhelm Busch decided to take the events into his own hands. Because it is not for nothing that he bears the name of the famous draftsman, poet and thinker. Why not stage the sensations if it helps the newspaper out of the red? And indeed: Friedheim is now making headlines even beyond the borders: "Who is the telephone vandal?" , "Is Friedheim the center of a spy ring?" , "Thorn a wonder drug for Friedreich Heimer" , "Girls (5 years) provides for the reunification ahead!" ... More and more often now a post yellow roars again Messerschmitt cabin scooter along border installations. Inside is the frenzied reporter Willi, who will soon take to the skies like a pilot.

"How good is it for someone who
can write something beautiful now and then !"

Reviews

“The fight of a provincial journalist on the border with the GDR for the continued existence of his dying newspaper. The sensations provoked by him in order to increase the circulation take on an uncontrollable life of their own, which their author is not up to. A multi-layered tragic comedy, cleverly designed and confidently staged, with precise information about the German reality of the time. In 1991 Niklaus Schilling shot a kind of sequel under the title "Deutschfieber". "

“Nikolaus Schilling shot a wonderfully played and staged, wonderful mixture of melodrama, satire, homeland film and agent story. The only thing that is stable, both thematically and formally, is that curious Messerschmitt cabin scooter in which the hero speeds through the beautiful and desolate landscape. "

“Whether the audience will actually recognize and accept the many advantages of this film to the appropriate extent cannot yet be foreseen; but if, perhaps in a hundred years, the search is made for the films that provide the most intensive information about our present, then 'The Willi Busch Report' will be one of the most important. "

technology

The Willi-Busch-Report is almost exclusively realized with the Steadicam . The tripod system newly developed by Garrett Brown at that time is adapted to the corresponding camera by means of a sophisticated, fully adjustable spring arm construction. Firmly connected to the cameraman by means of a vest, it enables very organic, floating camera guidance with extremely high mobility. Since the camera has to float freely, the recorded image is checked via an external monitor. The steadicam is now used very often, especially for action-packed sequences or subjective dramatic views. A certain amount of sportiness is also required for confident handling.

background

The fictional town of Friedheim was inspired by the small town of Wanfried , located directly on the former border with the GDR, where most of the filming took place. Many of the extras in the film also come from the place and its surroundings.

The film, made in 1979, got an unplanned "historical" sequel. With the fall of the wall and the entire German-German border, the Werra valley suddenly moved back to the center of Germany. As early as the historic November days of 1989, many residents in West and East were calling for a second to follow up on the first Willi Busch Report . It was not easy to secure the preservation of the superfluous border installations until the summer of 1991, as many facilities and installations were destroyed by souvenir hunters and vandals in the period after the opening of the border. With signs at the remaining border installations, Niklaus Schilling asked to keep the structures for the shooting. On May 13th, the first flap fell for German fever , the “only real continuation” of the Willi Busch report - again in Wanfried and again with the active participation of its residents.

Awards

In 1980 Niklaus Schilling received the Max Ophüls Prize for the Willi Busch Report, which was awarded for the first time by the City of Saarbrücken . In the same year, the film received an invitation to the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival .
