In 1992 Kiss released the album Revenge , which reached high chart positions and gold status. Musically, it was considered by the critics to be one of the most successful Kiss albums. Overall, it tied in with the moments of the classic phase of the Destroyer album and presented itself more powerfully. The simple, direct riffing is significant . The album starts with the metal- like Unholy .

Unholy was the first opening song sung by Gene Simmons in ten years. The title was based in part on the song Keep Me Waiting , which was written in the early 1970s as a song by Wicked Lester , the band from which Kiss emerged. In addition, Simmons picked up an idea that Adam Mitchell had realized for Doro Pesch in the song Unholy Love on their album Doro . Simmons liked the word "unholy" and wrote most of the music. He recorded a demo and developed the refrain. Gene Simmons and Vinnie Vincent reworked the song. Vincent had been the lead guitarist for Kiss from 1982 to 1984, had been released at the end of the tour for the album Lick It Up and had brought several lawsuits against Kiss and lost. For Revenge, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons gave him the chance to use his songwriting qualities and earn some money again. Vincent "turned the song inside out" and added parts of the text together with Simmons.

Unholy was released as the first decoupled single on May 2, 1992 and reached number 2 in Norway, number 19 in Sweden and number 26 in the UK charts. The CD single also contained the uncut version of God Gave Rock 'n' Roll to You II as well as the demo versions of the titles Deuce and Strutter . The video for the song was shot at Southern Bay Studios in Carson, California. Paul Rachman was the director and Maddhatter was in charge of production.

According to Simmons, the song has a deeper meaning: “The song talks about what we can do to each other in the name of humanity and religion. These things are responsible for more wars and misery in this world than anything in history. The religious always tell that man was created out of the image of God - bullshit. "

Text example:

I'm suicide and salvation
The omen to nations
That you worship on all fours
I'm the infection and famine
That's knocking at your door

I am suicide and redemption
The omen of the nations
That you worship on all fours
I am the infection and famine That knocks
on your door
