- January 5th : The neo-baroque Opéra Garnier , built by Charles Garnier , opens. The Paris Opera , chosen by Gaston Leroux as the setting for his novel Le fantôme de l'opéra , was the largest theater in the world at the time.
- November 11th : The public Parque Tres de Febrero is inaugurated in Buenos Aires . The site belonged to the former dictator Juan Manuel de Rosas and was expropriated from him.
