- April 15 - May 15 : Thirty painters exhibit their work in the studio of photographer Nadar in Paris . This also includes Claude Monet's picture Impression, soleil levant . The article headline L'exposition des Impressionistes , inspired by this, gives the new art direction Impressionism its name.
