Julio Fossa Calderon

Julio Fossa Calderón (born October 17, 1874 in Valparaíso ; died January 18, 1946 in Paris ) was a Chilean painter.

Fossa had first lessons in painting from 1896 at the Liceo of Valparaíso with Juan Francisco González . In 1897 he took drawing lessons from Evaristo A. Garrido and from 1898 he studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Santiago with Pedro Lira . In the same year his first pictures were exhibited in the Salón Oficial de Santiago .

In 1906 he received a scholarship for a stay in Europe and studied at the Académie Julian with Jean Paul Laurens . At the same time he took lessons with his farmer, the sculptor Lucas Tapia , at a municipal school on the Boulevard du Montparnasse . In 1910 he was accepted at the École des Beaux-Arts , where he attended Fernand Cormon's master class .

After a trip to Italy, Fossa returned to Chile in 1920 and succeeded Alberto Valenzuela Llanos as professor of painting at the Escuela de Bellas Artes . After another stay in Paris from 1922 to 1930, he became head of the Academia de Bellas Artes at the suggestion of the Rector of the Universidad de Chile , Armando Quezada Acharán , and took over the chairs of painting and artistic anatomy. At the Exposición Ibero-Americana in Seville, he won a first class medal for painting with a portrait of his wife Julia Núñez Squella.

In 1932 Fossa went to Europe again and became an official court painter at the Belgian court. This is where the portraits of King Leopold III were made. and his wife Astrid of Sweden . In France he was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1937. In the same year, President Arturo Alessandri Palma appointed him cultural attaché at the Chilean embassy in Rome and the French embassy.

When the Second World War broke out, Fossa stayed in Paris, where he died in 1946. His daughter Beatrice Fossa also became known as a painter.
