The opening takes place on May 25th in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth with a performance of the opera Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. - September 5 : The foundation stone for the New Hohenschwangau Castle is laid in the Ammergau Alps . - September 21 : The Royal Court Theater in Dresden , built by Gottfried Semper , is destroyed in a fire due to carelessness in repair work. After only six weeks of construction, the venue, which was built with simple construction equipment, offers space for around 1,800 people and is popularly known as the “Shack”, will open on December 2nd with Goethe's Iphigenie on Tauris .
- In Vienna, the construction of the Palais Hansen, designed by Theophil Hansen as a hotel, also in the neo-renaissance style, begins .
