Guillemet's career began in 1859 when he was commissioned to paint a copy of Géricault's famous painting , The Raft of Medusa . Berthe Morisot introduced the young Guillemet to Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot in 1861 . This acquaintance gave him the opportunity to meet numerous avant-garde painters , such as Édouard Manet , Camille Pissarro , Alfred Stevens , Claude Monet and Gustave Courbet .

He was an impressionist from around 1872 after naturalistic beginnings. For a long time he was friends with the writer Zola , who saw in him “le génie attendu”, the expected genius. Zola was inspired by him to write his painter novel L'Œuvre ( The Work ).

Since he was successful and was honored (Knight of the Legion of Honor 1880; Officier 1896; Commandeur 1910), “he helped Monet and supported Paul Cézanne . The inclusion of the only painting by Cézanne ever to be exhibited in the Salon in Paris was made following his intervention when he was a member of the jury in 1882. "

From 1881 Guillemet visited the landscapes of the Cotentin in Normandy and especially the Val de Saire , which inspired him to paint numerous paintings within nine years.

Édouard Manet portrayed Antoine Guillemet in his famous painting The Balcony .
