Alfred Stevens (born May 11, 1823 in Brussels ; † August 24, 1906 there ) was a Belgian painter .

Stevens was a student of the painter Arthur Naves in Brussels. With his support, Stevens came later - also as a student - in Paris in the studio of the painter Camille Roqueplan . Influenced by his teachers, Stevens indulged in history painting in his early works , but soon found his own style in genre painting .

Stevens was soon able to make a name for himself with descriptions of the elegant contemporary life in Paris, especially that of the boudoirs . Both public and official art critics were full of praise. The Belgian King Leopold II commissioned Stevens to decorate a room with the four seasons. Stevens designed this using a fresco technique and depicted the seasons as women in modern costumes. He later reproduced this work (and excerpts from it) in oil.

Stevens lived and worked in Paris for years and only returned to his hometown a few years before his death. He died there on August 14, 1906 at the age of 83.

His brother Joseph Stevens (1816-1892) was a well-known animal painter .

On January 30, 2010 the asteroid (13058) Alfredstevens was named after him.
