The exterior of the synagogue in 1865

September 5 : On the Jewish New Year celebrations , the New Synagogue in Berlin's Oranienburger Strasse, designed by Eduard Knoblauch in oriental style and completed by Friedrich August Stüler , is inaugurated in the presence of Prussia's Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck .

Design for the first Haas house in 1866

Construction of the Haas House begins on Stock-im-Eisen-Platz in the city center of Vienna . The architects for the building of the Philipp Haas & Sons carpet store, built in the historicist style, are August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll . It is the first house built on this site since the Middle Ages .

August 30th : Sculptor Vinnie Ream , who was only nineteen , was commissioned to create a marble statue of the murdered President Abraham Lincoln . She receives the order against the resistance of Lincoln's widow because she is the only one who has modeled the president during his lifetime.

December 5 : The Worms lithographer Wilhelm Schneider sends the first known full-page picture postcard without an envelope with the Thurn-und-Taxis-Post from Westhofen to Offstein .
