- December 22nd : The foundation stone for the Hamburger Kunsthalle , designed by Georg Theodor Schirrmacher and Hermann von der Hude based on the Berlin Schinkel School, is laid.
- The architect August Weber starts building the Künstlerhaus Wien .
- In Vienna's city park , the construction of starts Kursalon Hübner .
- Construction of the Kronprinz-Rudolf-Kaserne in Vienna begins.
- Nikolaus Dumba commissions today's Palais Dumba on Vienna's Ringstrasse in Viennese neo-renaissance style to the well-known Viennese architects Johann Romano vonringen and August Schwendenwein von Lonauberg .
- The neoclassical Lisbon Santa Apolónia train station is completed.

The equestrian statue of Prince Eugene on the Kaiserforum in Vienna , today's Heldenplatz , designed by Anton Dominik Fernkorn and completed by his students after his stroke , is completed. The superstructures come from Eduard van der Nüll . It is the counterpart to the statue of Archduke Charles , unveiled in 1860 , but does not achieve its technical perfection, as the horse's tail also touches the base.

- The exhibition of Édouard Manet's painting Olympia in the Paris Salon led to one of the greatest scandals in art history. Also, The Mocking of Christ is taken negatively by the public.
- After the failure of his painting Medieval Fighting Scene at the Paris Salon, Edgar Degas turned away from history painting . Subsequently, he mainly portrayed contemporary scenes from Parisian life.
- With a preliminary study in the forest of Fontainebleau, for which his lover Camille Doncieux and his friend Frédéric Bazille stand and sit as models, Claude Monet begins work on the painting Breakfast in the Green . From October he will start transferring the study into the large format he has planned, but which he will not finish.

- Immediately after the end of the Civil War , the Italian artist Constantino Brumidi created the fresco The Apotheosis of Washington at a height of about 55 meters in the top of the dome of the rotunda of the United States Capitol in Washington .
