Theodor Hamacher
Theodor Hamacher (born August 27, 1825 in Düsseldorf , † March 19, 1865 in Breslau ) was a German history and portrait painter from the Düsseldorf School .
Life
Hamacher was the son of the lithographer Johann Peter Joseph Hamacher (* 1780) and his wife Anna Maria, b. Durong (* around 1800). He studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , among others with its director Wilhelm Schadow . From 1846 to 1854 he worked as a court painter in Oldenburg . There he created the portraits of several members of the grand ducal house of Oldenburg , for example in 1847 the portrait of Cecilia of Sweden , who died in 1844 and whom Grand Duke August I had married in 1831 in her third marriage. Between 1851 and 1852, Hamacher and his brother-in-law Raphael Schall , who had been married to his sister Elisabeth since 1846, restored the frescoes in the Resurrection Chapel in Breslau Cathedral on behalf of the Breslau canon Heinrich Förster . Förster's further assignments followed after he had risen to become Prince-Bishop of Breslau in 1853 . Together with his brother-in-law Schall, Hamacher was one of the Prince-Bishop's preferred painters, and many of her pictures were included in his collection. In 1855 Hamacher was the best man for his sister Anna Catharina Josepha’s marriage to the Aachen goldsmith Reinhold Vasters . In 1865, the year of his death, Hamacher sent an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London with the portrait of his wife, who had given birth to his son Alfred in 1862 and Willy in 1865 . Both sons also became painters.
