Carl Georg Schillings
Carl Georg Schillings (born December 11, 1865 in Düren-Gürzenich , † January 29, 1921 in Berlin ) was a German photographer , big game hunter and animal rights activist .
Life
Between 1896 and 1903, Schillings traveled four times to German East Africa . He not only killed big game , which he u. a. collected for important German natural history museums , but also photographed the living animals for the first time in the wild . He is considered a pioneer of nature conservation and animal photography as well as night photography . In many lectures he conveyed his experiences in Africa to the people in Germany, which he published in 1905 in a volume With Blitzlicht und Büchse on 500 pages with 302 photos, Ludwig Heck wrote the foreword, and Paul attached a list of the mammal species killed or captured by Schillings Matschie and an overview of the bird species collected by Anton Reichenow .
An East African species of tick , Ixodes schillingsi Neumann, was named after him in 1901.
In 1950 the city of Düren bought the estate with a collection of his preparations for animals . It is housed in the Leopold Hoesch Museum in Düren.
His brother Max von Schillings was a composer, conductor and theater director. The Schillingsstrasse was named after both brothers in Düren-Gürzenich.
