Dürerbund

The Dürerbund was a cultural and political association that existed from 1902 to 1935. The name was reminiscent of Albrecht Dürer .

History and program

The Dürerbund was founded on October 1, 1902 in Dresden by the publisher and writer Ferdinand Avenarius in collaboration with the art historian Paul Schumann . He was later closely associated with the German Werkbund and the Federation of Heimatschutz .

The aim of the association was the aesthetic education of the people and the cultivation of culture. It became the leading cultural reformation organization in German-speaking countries. In addition to artists and writers, it also included students, teachers and theologians. He also served as a sales organ for the magazine Der Kunstwart . Its widespread use made it easier to attract well-known personalities to work on the board or local associations, including Adolf Bartels , Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach , Julius Graebner , Elsbeth Krukenberg-Conze , Karl Lamprecht , Friedrich Naumann and Henry Thode .

Dürerbundhaus Blasewitz

The leaflets published by the Dürerbund from 1905 onwards reached a circulation of 2.8 million copies with 250 titles. At that time, the Dürerbund published the best German art calendar, the Gesundbrunnen yearbook (edition: 50,000). The Dürerbund awarded coveted seals of approval for literary products.

In 1910, a Dürerbund house was built in Blasewitz directly on the Elbe according to plans by Heinrich Tscharmann and Gustav Hänichen (destroyed on February 13, 1945). In 1912, the Dürerbund had more than 300,000 personal or indirect members in institutions. The Dürerbund-Werkbund-Genossenschaft, founded in Hellerau in 1914, published the German Commodity Book with quality assessments for industrial products a year later .

After Avenarius' death in 1923, Paul Schumann, his son Wolfgang Schumann and Paul Schultze-Naumburg took over the management of the Dürerbund. There was a further expansion of activities, including a. the publication of the widely read German Youth Library went to the federal government.

The Dürerbund was dissolved by Karl Hanusch on December 21, 1935 .
