Karl Etzel , from 1853 by Etzel , (also Carl ; born January 6, 1812 in Stuttgart , † May 2, 1865 in Kemmelbach near Ybbs on the trip) was a German railway engineer and architect . He created numerous well-known railway lines , bridges and viaducts, including the Bietigheimer railway viaduct .

Life

Karl von Etzel was the son of the Stuttgart city planner Gottlieb Christian Eberhard von Etzel , the builder of the Neue Weinsteige in Stuttgart. Because the father built houses for the Rauch and Mertz families in Heilbronn from 1811 to 1812 , the legend of the birthplace of Heilbronn arose. However, Stuttgart is documented as the place of birth by the baptismal register.

The young Etzel studied with Nikolaus Friedrich von Thouret from 1831 to 1835 . From 1835 Karl von Etzel worked in railway construction in France , including the Paris ( Saint-Lazare ) - Saint-Germain railway with the Seine bridge near Asnières (destroyed during the February Revolution in 1848 and later rebuilt). From 1837 he was chief engineer in the construction of the Versailles Railway.

In 1840 he went to Vienna , where he carried out various buildings. Together with Ludwig Förster , he built the first swimming pool on the continent here in the (first) Dianabad in steel construction. In 1843 he was employed as a senior building officer in Württemberg , where he played a key role in the construction of the Württemberg main line and the Geislinger Steige - the first crossing of a low mountain range in Europe. He built the first central train station in Stuttgart , which opened on September 26, 1846.

In 1853 Etzel switched to the Swiss Zentralbahn as construction manager , where he managed, among other things, the construction of the Hauenstein line with its tunnel and was involved in planning the first Sitter Viaduct and the first Grandfey Viaduct .

He then created his most famous and largest work in Austria , the Brennerbahn (1864–1867), but did not live to see its completion.

Karl von Etzel suffered a stroke on November 13, 1864 and therefore asked to be released. While a special train was traveling by train to Stuttgart-Cannstatt, where he wanted to retire in the Villa Etzel, which was built and furnished according to his designs, he died of a second stroke on May 2, 1865 in Kemmelbach, a town between Vienna and Linz.

In his life Etzel had built over 1,500 kilometers of railroads independently and also wrote large and small literary works, for example some articles in 1844 for the Stuttgarter Eisenbahn-Zeitung, which he edited. The instructions he issued are written in an unsurpassable brevity.

Karl von Etzel had been married to a daughter of Karl von Gärttner , Marie (* 1828), who cared for him until his death and with whom he had a daughter and two sons.

In 1853, Karl Etzel was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown , which was associated with the personal nobility.

His tomb, which was erected by the burner from various stones and decorated with a relief portrait, is still in the Prague cemetery in Stuttgart.

A monument with a bust of Carl von Etzel was to mark the 25th anniversary of the Brenner railway from the Austro-Hungarian private Southern Railway Company at the railway station burner built. As a result of the annexation of South Tyrol by the Kingdom of Italy after the First World War , the monument created by Johann Rathausky was supplemented by an Italian-language inscription.

A street in Heilbronn's industrial area has been called Etzelstraße since 1912. In December 1927 the city of Innsbruck named a street running along the railway system after him as Ing.-Etzel-Straße. The house at Neckartalstrasse 67 in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt bears a plaque commemorating the construction of the building by Karl Etzel in 1846. The city of Stuttgart only recently dedicated a street to him at the main train station, on the former site of the freight yard ("Carl-Etzel-Straße"). In the city of Graz , the Karl-Etzel-Weg in the districts of Wetzelsdorf and Straßgang was named after him. The city of Sterzing has also named a street after Etzel ( Karl-von-Etzel-Straße ).

On the Hauenstein line near Buckten, the name of the engineer is carved into a rock wall as an inscription in large, strongly recessed letters.
