Gottlieb Christian Eberhard von Etzel (born December 15, 1784 in Stuttgart ; † November 30, 1840 there ) was a city planner in his hometown of Stuttgart as the royal Württemberg senior building officer. Etzel was buried in the Hoppenlaufriedhof in Stuttgart .

His grandfather was Johann Leonhard Etzel , Stuttgart carpenter and master craftsman, died in 1774. In 1758 he built the roof of the New Palace in Stuttgart.

His uncle was Johann Christian Adam Etzel , master carpenter (1743-1801), agricultural controller, from 1794 agricultural master for the buildings of the church council. In addition to wide-span roof structures over wide church rooms ( Stadtkirche Göppingen ), it was known for wooden bridges over rivers, which with the innovative technology of suspension and trussing combination - as in 1778 at Plochingen over the Neckar - had a span of up to 70 meters without supports. He was called the "wooden Etzel". Christian A. Etzel belonged with the Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio (1508–1580) and the Swiss brothers (1707–1783) Johann and Hans Ulrich Grubenmann to the elite of European bridge builders of their time.

His father was Johann Eberhard Etzel (1745–1792), also a (stone) bridge builder, therefore called "the stone Etzel".

Christian Eberhard Etzel's son, Karl Etzel (1812–1865), railway engineer and architect, created numerous well-known railway lines in southern Germany and Austria, for example the Geislinger Steige and the Bietigheimer Enzviadukt.

Known objects

Honors
