David Levy Elkan
David Levy Elkan (born December 1, 1808 in Cologne ; † July 1, 1865 there ) was a painter, draftsman and lithographer .
Life
Elkan, one of two sons of the Bayreuth- born Cologne elementary school teacher Hermann Levy Elkan (1765-1839) and his wife Adelheid Seligmann (also Adelaide Amsel , 1761-1856), was born into the so-called " French era ". Elkan worked as a painter and lithographer and is considered a representative of the Rhine romanticism . He owned a lithographic institute in Cologne and was a busy illustrator . He also drew the cover designs in the Biedermeier style for some of the early editions of the Baedeker travel guides .
In 1835 he married Sibille Benoit (also Lisette Steinhausen , 1808–1867), who between 1836 and 1851 gave birth to seven children, five daughters and two sons.
Elkan was politically involved. With his professional colleague Wilhelm Kleinenbroich and other prominent Cologne residents, he was one of the most active revolutionaries in the pre-March period and during the German Revolution. Both artists were among the 79 founding members of the “General Aid and Education Association” (for Cologne and Deutz), in which socialists, communists and other democrats worked together.
From 1859 to 1864 he was based in Düsseldorf . On February 7, 1859, he joined the bookseller Heinrich Bäumer (real name Möthe; * 1818) in the former Düsseldorf store Arnz & Comp. Founded in 1816 . a. After Bäumer left in September 1862, he sold it to Wilhelm Breidenbach in the summer of 1864.
His grave is in the Jewish cemetery in Cologne-Deutz (corridor X).
