painting
- Claude Monet spends the summer with his family, with whom he has a tense relationship, in Sainte-Adresse on the Norman Channel coast. Here he paints several Impressionist oil paintings, including The Terrace of Sainte-Adresse . The work is heavily influenced by Japanese art , especially Japanese woodblock prints . A work by the Japanese painter Katsushika Hokusai in particular shows clear parallels to Monet's painting.
- Édouard Manet produced the first two versions of his oil painting The Execution of Emperor Maximilian of Mexico .
Postcards
- March 28th : One of the first full-page illustrated open cards in Germany is sent out in Berlin . Another such forerunner of the postcard will be sent from Wroclaw on October 30th .
Founding of clubs
- Marie Remy and Clara Wilhelmine Oenicke found the Association of Artists and Friends of Art in Berlin together with other women . Since women do not have legal capacity in the German Reich , there are officially male founding members who are bound by honorary membership to the association without being full members. Despite its name, the association is geared towards the entire German-speaking area and the neighboring countries. For example, Marie Wiegmann from Düsseldorf and Antonie Biel from Stralsund also become members of the association.
