Johann Garben

Johann Garben (born December 17, 1824 in Hamburg , † December 1, 1876 in Vienna ) was a German architect who worked in Austria .

Life

Johann Garben was the son of a Hamburg sugar manufacturer. Nothing is known about the nature and circumstances of his training; in any case, he first appeared in a Viennese address book in 1860 with the professional title of architect. From this point on he lived and worked permanently in Vienna. Among other things, he worked for the Allgemeine Österreichische Baugesellschaft . From 1862 Garben was a member of the cooperative of visual artists of Vienna and from 1865 of the Viennese Bauhütte.

Act

Johann Garben was a representative of historicism . He created several well-known and representative buildings in Vienna, mainly in the Ringstrasse zone . In addition to the early neo-Gothic work of the Sisi Chapel, he mainly used forms of the Viennese Neo-Renaissance . In all works, a strong plasticity of the facades and an opulent decor can be noticed, which met the need for representation at the time.
