Kursalon Huebner
The Kursalon Hübner is a historicist building in the style of the Italian Renaissance in Vienna . It is located at Johannesgasse 33 in Vienna's 1st district, Innere Stadt .
history
In the place of today's city park , the so-called water glacis was located at the beginning to the middle of the 19th century , a place for relaxation at the gates of Vienna. Healing and mineral water for drinking cures was served in a spa pavilion. After the razing of the Vienna city wall and the construction of the Ringstrasse by order of Emperor Franz Joseph I , the city park was built and opened in 1862. In order to offer more opportunities for recreation, a new spa salon (slightly more west than the original spa pavilion) was designed by the architect Johann GarbenBuilt on behalf of the City of Vienna between 1865 and 1867. Originally the building was supposed to serve as a coffee house and once again for the serving of medicinal water, after the opening on May 8, 1867, entertainment was even prohibited. Since this concept was not accepted, the first concert by Johann Strauss (son) took place on October 15, 1868 , after which the Kursalon became a popular dance and concert venue and a meeting place for Viennese society.
In 1908, Hans Huebner leased the Kursalon, which from then on was called Huebners Kursalon and later Kursalon Huebner . Numerous events and social events took place here until the middle of the 20th century. At the end of the 1990s, the City of Vienna sold the Kursalon, which is now owned by the former tenant, the Hübner family.
While the external appearance of the building largely corresponds to the original designs by Johann Garben, the interior, including the ballroom, has not been preserved in its historical substance, but has been significantly changed in the style of the second post-war period.
The Kursalon has been leased by Josip Susnjara since 2002 and used as a venue for balls, weddings and various other events. It comprises four halls on two floors and a 1000 m² terrace with a view of the city park. Under the umbrella of "Kursalon Betriebs GmbH" around 500 classical concerts with a total of around 200,000 visitors are organized each year.
