Artur Grottger began his studies at home and later went to Vienna , where he became a student of Karl von Blaas at the art academy . His ingenious talent, enhanced by patriotic enthusiasm, was revealed early on in a cycle of charcoal drawings that dealt with the failed January uprising in his home country and recall Jan Matejko in the passionate description .

Grottger died four weeks after his 30th birthday on December 13, 1867 in the Pyrenees bath Amélie-les-Bains-Palalda. His drawings (partly in the possession of Count Pálffy ) have been reproduced photographically.
