Emil Cauer the Elder

Emil Cauer the Elder (* 29. November 1800 in Dresden , † 4. August 1867 in Kreuznach ) was a German sculptor of Classicism . Cauer is the progenitor of an extensive family of sculptors .

Life

He was born in Dresden as the son of the general practitioner Carl Ludwig Cauer (1750-1813). After he died, his eldest brother Ludwig took him to Berlin in January 1814 . In 1821 Emil Cauer entered the Berlin Art Academy . In 1822 he worked in Christian Daniel Rauch's studio , and in 1824 he moved to Munich . Just one year later he moved to Bonn , where he received a teaching position as a drawing teacher at the university. He stayed four years and mainly modeled portrait busts.

In 1829 he became curator of the collection of antiques in Dresden . In 1832 he moved to Kreuznach, where he again took up a drawing teacher position at the Royal High School as the successor to Eduard von Leslie . He set up his own studio in Kreuznach. Emil Cauer died there in 1867 at the age of 66. He became known through a series of statuettes of historical personalities, such as Franz von Sickingen , Ulrich von Hutten , Götz von Berlichingen , Martin Luther , Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and Charles V.

His sons Robert and Karl also became famous sculptors, as did his grandson Robert Cauer the Elder. J. His daughter Anna (1829–1881), married to Stanislaus von Kalckreuth , is the great-grandmother a. a. by Karl Friedrich , Klaus , Dietrich and Sabine Bonhoeffer . The latter worked as a sculptor herself for a time, and a few portrait busts of her twin brother Dietrich Bonhoeffer have survived .
