Gustav Kruell

Gustav Kruell (born October 31, 1843 as Gustav Krüll in Düsseldorf - Grafenberg ; † January 2, 1907 in San Luis Obispo , California ) was a German-American portrait - wood engraver and illustrator .

Kruell learned xylography from Richard Brend'amour in Düsseldorf . For the "Xylographische Kunstanstalt Brend'amour & Cie." He created wood engravings that appeared in the magazine Die Gartenlaube in 1865 . Later he moved to Leipzig , then to Stuttgart , where he ran the xylographic institute "Krüll und Michael" with Mori [t] z Michael. By 1873 at the latest, he settled in the United States and gained a reputation as a portrait wood engraver. He lived in East Orange , New Jersey , and later in San Luis Obispo, California. With his compatriot Friedrich Jüngling (also Frederick Juengling , 1846-1889) he founded the Society of American Wood Engravers in 1881 and took over its chairmanship.
