Caroline Klauhold

Caroline Klauhold , b. von der Embde (also Karoline, Lina; born January 31, 1812 in Kassel , † November 28, 1867 in Hamburg ) was a German portrait , genre and landscape painter .

Life

Caroline was one of the four daughters of the Kassel painter August von der Embde (1780–1862) and his wife Sophie Charlotte born. Henschel (1787–1856), daughter of the piece caster and company founder Georg Henschel and sister of the sculptor Johann Werner Henschel and the manufacturer Carl Anton Henschel .

Like her younger sister Emilie , she was a student and collaborator of her father, whose genre and portrait painting influenced her style very much. She took up his most popular motifs and, like her father, painted mostly individual and group portraits of the upper class Kassel bourgeoisie and the Hessian nobility, often in front of landscape backgrounds or detailed rural genre scenes, but also some pure landscape pictures. Often she also completed her father's compositions, so that it is often difficult to clearly separate the two works. Her finely glazed Biedermeier style of painting hardly allowed any distinction from that of her father. In fact, the portraits of the citizens of Kassel, which were created after the middle of the century under the name of their father, are said to come mainly from Caroline.

From 1850 to 1852 she worked in Düsseldorf , and from 1849 to 1860 she took part in exhibitions in Bremen , Dresden , Kassel , Cologne , Munich and Wiesbaden . In 1854 she married the lawyer Alfred Klauhold , formerly a public prosecutor at the higher court in Rotenburg an der Fulda , who had resigned during the Hessian constitutional conflict in 1851, and moved with him to Bremen. In 1856, Klauhold became director of the Hamburg-Bremer fire insurance company in Hamburg and moved there with his wife. Since her wedding, the painter has signed "Klauhold von der Embde".
