Pieces and bell-caster , from the Ständebuch of Christoph Weigel the Elder (1697)

The job of the piece caster (also gun master ), which was common from the 14th to the 19th century, comprised the activities of manufacturing gun barrels from gun or piece bronze . Piece casters were more or less specialized ore casters or later red casters . Since the production of particularly large castings meant special requirements in general, they also worked under the designation of piece and bell foundries or vice versa. Another peculiarity of piece casting was the extensive machining of the core, i.e. H. of the cavity of the pipe after casting .

One of the noteworthy piece caster is Urban, of whom Urban’s cannons (1452) receive special mention. Special pieces by Albert Benningk are also known well into the 21st century.
