Franz Josef Dobiaschofsky (born November 23, 1818 in Vienna ; † December 7, 1867 there ) was an Austrian painter .

Life

Franz Josef Dobiaschofsky was the son of the women's clothing maker Josef Dobiaschofsky and his friend Katharina Klara Kriechbaum. He was born in the “Zur Alster” house in the former Neudeggergrund (today Neudeggergasse 4).

From 1830 to 1841 he attended the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts , where he was a student of Joseph von Führich and Leopold Kupelwieser . In 1848 his picture Faust and Gretchen caused a sensation in the 19th century because he had portrayed Faust as a student with a black, red and gold sash and a calabrian . After the police objected, he had to paint over the picture.

1850/51 Dobiaschofsky was provisional professor of painting at the preparatory school of the academy. 1854–56 he went on a study trip to Rome . In 1865 he became an academic councilor.

Franz Josef Dobiaschofsky lived in the Geylinghaus Windmühlgasse 28, where many of his pictures were taken. He was an employee of the painter Carl Geyling and belonged to his circle of friends. After his death Dobiaschofsky was buried in the Schmelzer cemetery .

In 1955 the Dobiaschofskyweg in Vienna-Altmannsdorf was named in honor of the artist.

Works

Dobiaschowsky was primarily a history painter and painter of religious paintings in the succession of the Nazarenes . His teachers Führich and Kupelwieser shaped him, but from 1848 he broke away from the strict religious conception of Führich and also created genre pictures . In addition to some altarpieces in Viennese churches, Dobiaschofsky also painted frescoes for the grand stairs of the court opera.
