The Calabrian is a wide-brimmed felt hat originally from Calabria (hence the name) with a pointed head. It was worn by the Italian Republicans (freedom fighters) in 1848. The Baden revolutionary Friedrich Hecker (1811–1881) also wore it and made it popular, which is why the name Heckerhut was formed and has remained to this day. Later, "Kalabreser" was also the name for a lady's straw hat. Furthermore, the hat of the journeyman carpenter on the Walz is also called a calabrian.
