Dynamic Drive Overlay

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Dynamic Drive Overlay ( DDO for short ) is a reloaded PC-BIOS extension that supplements a system BIOS in such a way that the IDE hard disk systems connected via IDE / ATA controller can be used with their maximum capacity and speed.

The reason for the requirement of such a tool is the recurring problem that board manufacturers regularly do not address every general innovation in computer technology with an updated ROM or Flash BIOS, especially if the associated product is already in production or even by a new one newer was replaced. For example, even 5 years after the LBA- 48 standard was passed, systems were still being brought into circulation that were equipped with disks that were just below the associated limit of 137 GB, while the BIOS support also ended exactly there.

The Dynamic Drive Overlay is provided by the hard disk manufacturer and must be installed in the boot sector of the hard disk so that it is loaded when the system starts. It replaces the individual functions of the BIOS with software that support the extended standard. After loading, the entire capacity of the drive is available to the user.
