The Purk parish church stands dominantly on a high hill that slopes steeply towards the Purkbach in Purk in the market town of Kottes-Purk in the Zwettl district in Lower Austria . The Roman Catholic parish church consecrated to St. Martin of Tours - incorporated into the Göttweig Abbey - belongs to the Deanery Spitz in the diocese of St. Pölten . The church and the cemetery are under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

A church was mentioned in a document in 1121. In 1124 a donation was made to the Göttweig Abbey. Around 1320 parish in connection with Kottes. In the 16th century the church was partly not occupied. In 1784 the independent parish was founded.

architecture

The Romanesque church with late Gothic and Baroque additions and alterations is surrounded by a cemetery with a medieval wall. Opposite the church is the rectory, presumably as a successor to a former manor house.

During the restoration in 1971, a Romanesque window and a Romanesque arched portal on the north side of the three-aisled nave were uncovered. The facade has buttresses from the 15th century and baroque arched windows. The Romanesque choir with a round apse has a walled up round arched window in the east and baroque flat arched windows to the side. In the north of the choir is a Gothic sacristy from the 15th century with a triangle closure with buttresses and pointed arched windows. In the south of the choir there is a rectangular sacristy under a pent roof. The late Gothic west tower with a baroque bell storey has retracted arched windows and a pyramid helmet.

The interior of the church shows itself as a three-aisled Romanesque nave, in the central nave with a ribbed vault around 1520, with arched openings to the side aisles. The side aisles are barrel vaulted, only the south aisle is vaulted to the east with a Gothic rib vault in a three-beam formation. The baroque organ gallery was moved into the central nave in 1684. A slightly drawn-in high triumphal arch connects the central nave with the square, star-rib vaulted choir with a Romanesque apse dome. The northern sacristy is a former chapel with a late Gothic net rib vault. The southern former sacristy is barrel vaulted. The tower ground floor is barrel vaulted. In the attic of the church there are stencils and ashlar paintings from the 13th century.

Furnishing

The neo-baroque high altar from 1912 uses older baroque parts and has a column structure with a volute crowning top and sacrificial passage portals. He carries the figure group Holy Trinity and the side figures Rochus and Sebastian and in the essay a figure Madonna. The left early Baroque side altar from the second half of the 17th century has a column structure with three niches and a blasted gable. There are noteworthy predelle images from the 17th century depicting saints, the figures of the Virgin, Antony and Theresa are from 1912. The right, late Baroque side altar from the third quarter of the 18th century is a pilaster retable with rocailles decoration and a volute excerpt Figure group coat donation of St. Martin and the side figures Leonhard and Notburga. The pulpit was built around 1800. The baroque crucifix is ​​from the end of the 17th century.

The Romanesque font is from the 13th century. The baroque pinnacle chandeliers are from the 18th century. Remarkable pictures of the Way of the Cross from the circle of the painter Martin Johann Schmidt were made around 1800. An oil painting shows Christ with St. Martin by Franz Josef Dobiaschofsky around 1860.

Joseph Gatto the Elder built the parapet organ in 1815.
