Georg Kestner (born May 1, 1774 in Hanover ; † October 25, 1867 there ) was a German archivist , banker and collector of works of art and autographs .

Georg Kestner was the eldest son of the lawyer and archivist Johann Christian Kestner and his wife Charlotte Buff as well as the brother of the diplomat and art collector August Kestner . He was the godchild of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe . Georg Kestner married Henriette Partz (1784–1867), the daughter of a senior official in 1802, with whom he had four children: Wilhelmine (1803–1855), since 1822 wife of the architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves , Georg Wilhelm Eduard Kestner (1805–1892), who was his Successors as archivist in Hanover were Georg Wilhelm Carl Theodor Kestner (1806–1831), auditor at the law office in Hanover, and Hermann Kestner (1810–1890).

Career

Born at the time of the Electorate of Hanover in one of the pretty families of Hanover, he was initially appointed archivist in Hanover to succeed his father . Georg Kestner founded a banking business in Hanover during the so-called “ French era ”, which he was able to develop into a successful company at times together with his son Hermann. With the wealth thus acquired, Kestner was able to build up a painting and graphic collection comprising around 500 objects, the majority of which included portraits of historical personalities.

Also together with his son Hermann, Georg Kestner was one of the founding members of the Hannoversche Künstlerverein in 1842 .

After the death of Georg Kestner, who was buried in the Engesohder cemetery , the banker's collection was divided between his four children. The share of the son Hermann Kestner, plus his own art collection and a donation of 100,000 marks , later went into the collection of the Kestner Museum as a basic stock with the more important collection of his brother August . The autograph collection went to his son Georg and after his death in 1892 it came to the Leipzig University Library in a will .
