Exhibitions
- May 5th to October 17th : The Art Treasures of Great Britain exhibition takes place in Manchester . With over 16,000 works on display, it is still one of the largest art exhibitions in history. Over 1.3 million people visit the exhibition. Queen Victoria will also visit the exhibition on June 29th . An orchestra under the direction of Charles Hallé puts on a concert every day.

- February 23 : 13 architects found the American Institute of Architects in New York City . Richard Upjohn is elected first president .
- April 27 : The first Teatro Colón , built by Charles Pellegrini and featuring Verdi's La traviata, opens on the south-western corner of the Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires .

- September 4 : In Weimar , the bronze Goethe-Schiller monument created by the Dresden sculptor Ernst Rietschel with the support of his assistant Gustav Kietz is inaugurated in front of the Weimar Court Theater . The foundryman Ferdinand von Miller completed the bronze casting in the royal ore foundry in Munich . Melted Ottoman cannon barrels from the Battle of Navarino were used as material . The next day, at the inauguration of the Faust Symphony by Franz Liszt first performed.

- The Swedish-British photographer Oscar Gustave Rejlander creates his most famous work, the collage The Two Ways of Life . The initial criticism of the work's “indecency” ceases when Queen Victoria purchases a copy for her husband.
