mojoreads (formerly log.os ) is an online platform for literature that combines community and shop elements.

In contrast to literature communities such as LovelyBooks or Goodreads, mojoreads has its own e-reading software as well as a shop so that books can be bought and read directly on the platform and their content can be shared.

functionality

The website is ad-free and is based on the recommendations of members who earn an affiliate fee on every book that is bought through their recommendation. It can therefore be assigned to social commerce .

Readers, authors, bloggers and publishers can set up their own profile on mojoreads, maintain their books in lists, rate books (“mojo”), create topic groups and follow one another. Text passages can also be commented on and shared via the reader ( social reading ).

history

mojoreads was founded in 2015 as log.os GmbH & Co. KG by the non-profit log.os Förderverein eV under the direction of Volker Oppmann. Oppmann had previously founded the independent publisher Onkel & Onkel in 2007 and the eBook company textunes in 2008, which was taken over by the Thalia bookstore chain in 2011 .

In contrast to ordinary start-up companies, mojoreads deliberately avoided venture capital and instead positioned the platform in the area of the common good economy . As a social enterprise , a strict self-commitment was imposed to put the platform at the service of a free, democratic knowledge and information society.

In 2016 the website was launched as an open beta platform. Mojoreads has also been available as an app for Android and iOS since 2017 .
