Life

Shackleton was the son of William Stancliff and Constance Shackleton, née Hope, and a relative of the polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton , which fueled his childhood interest in expeditions. His father was an aircraft designer. His older brother Allen was killed during World War II .

The family lived in Melbourne , Australia for a period before settling in Oundle in 1931 . Shackleton attended the Oundle School , where he was friends with the painter and conservationist Peter Scott . He served in the Royal Air Force from 1941 to 1946, drawing war scenes for both the Army and Navy . From 1948 to 1963 he worked as a pilot and businessman for the family company Shackleton Aviation Ltd. In September 1951 he married Jacqueline Tate. From this marriage a daughter and two sons were born.

Shackleton painted in his spare time before turning to his art full-time. He was influenced by Peter Scott, Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe and Edward Seago . In 1964 he was a founding member and from 1978 to 1983 President of the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA). From 1964 to 1998 he presented the documentary series Animal Magic in the children's program of the BBC with Johnny Morris . In 1969 he was a naturalist alongside Peter Scott on board the cruise ship MS Lindblad Explorer on an Antarctic expedition. This tour is considered to be a forerunner to ecotourism in Antarctica. From 1973 to 1978 he was President of the Royal Society of Marine Artists . In the late 1970s he returned to television and hosted his own series, Anmals in Action , for ITV from 1979 to 1982 , which was produced by Anglia Television and which contained footage from the television series Survival .

Shackleton was a member of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS), the Zoological Society of London (FZS), the British Ornithologists' Union , the New Zealand Antarctic Society and the Royal Aero Club . In 1994 he became Vice President of the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT). From 1997 to 2000 he was a trustee of the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust . He was also chairman of the Artists League of Great Britain .

The ornithologist and biology professor Roger J. Lederer wrote in 2019:

"Shackleton's meticulously crafted animal and ocean images leave a dramatic and emotional impression, and the depiction of the icy waters forming and the gloomy sky of the polar regions have a strong impact."

Awards

In 1986, the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau , Wisconsin recognized him as a "Master Wildlife Artist". At Queen Elizabeth II's Birthday Honors in 2012, he was named a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE).
