Oundle is an English town with 5345 inhabitants (as of 2001) on the River Nene in Northamptonshire . It is located about 20 km southwest of Peterborough in the East Northamptonshire district . The place is famous for the boarding school Oundle School , which was founded from the fortune of William Laxton , who was born in Oundle and was Lord Mayor of London in 1544 . Oundle is also the seat of the motor yacht manufacturer Fairline .

St Peter's Church in Oundle has the tallest church spire in Northamptonshire at 210 feet . The church was in the limelight when a church court ruled in 1996 that it could add a gargoyle with the face of Bill Westwood , the Bishop of Peterborough , although some parishioners opposed it.

A community partnership has existed with the French community of Andrésy since 2001.
