Architecture and horticulture
- April 19 : The Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, built by Gabriel Davioud on behalf of Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann on the Place du Châtelet , opens. In the same year, the Théâtre de la Ville , also built by Davioud, opens on the same square opposite .
- August 21 : The Vienna City Park , designed by the landscape painter Joseph Sellény and laid out by city gardener Rudolph Siebeck , on the site of the recently demolished water glacis in the style of an English landscape park , opens as the second Volksgarten in Vienna . In the same year Siebeck also started to build the Schönbornpark and the Esterházypark .
- November 13th : The Nassau State Cathedral built by Carl Boos on the Schloßplatz in Wiesbaden is inaugurated. The model of the three-aisled basilica without a transept in neo-Gothic style with classical ornamentation is the Friedrichswerder Church by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in Berlin. Today's Marktkirche is the first brick building in the Duchy of Nassau .
- The redesign of the Parisian boulevards by Georges-Eugène Haussmann led to the demolition of most of the theaters on the Boulevard du Temple , including the Théâtre-Lyrique , the Théâtre des Folies-Dramatiques , the Théâtre de la Gaîté and the Théâtre des Funambules .
- In the newly laid out garden in Kensington , London, the Royal Horticultural Society is holding a garden exhibition, a forerunner of the later Chelsea Flower Show .

- July 25 : The Idstedt lion , created by the Danish sculptor Herman Wilhelm Bissen , is unveiled at the Old Cemetery in Flensburg , facing south as a symbol of the Danish victory over the Schleswig-Holsteiners .
- The fish fountain on Marienplatz in Munich is being redesigned with bronze sculptures by the sculptor Konrad Knoll . The work lasts until 1865 .

- Édouard Manet founded the Societé des Aquafortistes together with Felix Bracquemond, Henri Fantin-Latour, Alphonse Legros , Johan Barthold Jongkind and Augustin Théodule Ribot , encouraged by the editor Alfred Cadart and the photographer Félix Chevalier . This artists' association has set itself the goal of promoting the art of etching . Especially in the 1860s, Manet made numerous etchings based on his paintings.

- Louis Ducos du Hauron publishes the first investigations into a color photographic process. Corresponding processes are also being developed by Charles Cros in parallel . However, only du Hauron can subsequently demonstrate a practicable procedure. This is based on bromide silver collodion plates and results in pigment slides . However, both methods are based on the principle of three colors .
- Mathew B. Brady is showing a photo exhibition of the Battle of Antietam in his gallery in New York . There, under the title The Dead of Antietam , drastic pictures of fallen soldiers are shown for the first time. Brady's habit of only marketing his employees' pictures under his name leads to a break with brothers James and Alexander Gardner and Timothy H. O'Sullivan , who go their own way , at the end of the year .

- The art collection of Count Nikolai Petrovich Rumyantsev , who died in 1826, is moved from Saint Petersburg to Moscow. The result is the Rumyantsev Museum , the first public museum in Moscow.
