James Jebusa Shannon
Sir James Jebusa Shannon CBE RA (born February 3, 1862 in Auburn , New York , † April 23, 1923 in London ) was an Anglo-American painter .
Life
James Jebusa Shannon was a son of Irish parents. In 1870 the family moved to St. Catherines, Ontario . His parents recognized his artistic talent at an early age and so he received private painting and drawing lessons from the local painter E. William Wright, who urged him to continue his studies in London. In 1878 he traveled to England and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art under Sir Edward Poynter . Soon after, Shannon was considered Poynter's most gifted pupil and received orders from Queen Victoria to portray her between 1881 and 1882 . Due to his success as a portrait painter, his departure to Canada was delayed again and again. In 1886 James Jebusa Shannon married Lady Florence Mary Cartwright in London; a year later their daughter Kitty and in 1890 daughter Marjorie were born. In the years that followed, he painted them on many occasions.
In the mid-1880s, Shannon, along with his American colleague John Singer Sargent, dominated British portraiture. Shannon's popularity was fueled by the patronage of Lady Violet Manners, Duchess of Rutland (1856–1937). He had his studio on Holland Park Road in London. In 1904 he and his family traveled to the United States for three years.
