Stamatios Kleanthis (also Kleanthes , Greek Σταμάτιος Κλεάνθης , * 1802 in Velvendo ; † 1862 in Athens ) was a Greek architect.

Kleanthis was born in Velvendo in today's Kozani regional district in the Macedonia region, which was then under Turkish rule . His penniless parents sent him to Bucharest to attend a Greek school free of charge . After graduating, he returned to Velvendo. In 1821 he took part in the uprising of the Greeks against the Ottoman Empire . Kleanthis joined the unit around General Alexander Ypsilantis . During the Battle of Dragatsani , Kleanthis was captured but managed to escape. He went to Vienna and then to Leipzig where he studied architecture . He later continued his studies in Berlin as a student of Karl Friedrich Schinkel , where he stayed until 1828. After completing his studies, he went to Athens with his fellow student Eduard Schaubert to work for the Greek government under President Kapodistrias . In 1832, Kleanthis and Schaubert designed a new city map for Athens, which included wide avenues, gardens and large public buildings. This design was simplified by Leo von Klenze because it was judged to be too expensive. After disagreements with the government, Kleanthis eventually resigned.

Kleanthis designed numerous important buildings in Athens, including the villa of Sophie de Marbois-Lebrun , Duchess of Plaisance, which now houses the Byzantine Museum of Athens.

Kleanthis made great fortunes as an architect and operator of a marble quarry on the island of Paros . Marble from his quarry was awarded the gold medal at the Great Exhibition in London . In 1862 he suffered an accident in his quarry. He was taken to Athens where he eventually died.
