Augustin Théodule Ribot (born August 8, 1823 in Saint-Nicolas-d'Attez [today: Sainte-Marie-d'Attez ], Département Eure , † September 11, 1891 in Colombes , Hauts-de-Seine ) was a French painter .

Life

Ribot was his parents' only son. When his father died, he was only 17 years old and had to care for his mother and sisters. So he took a job as an accountant in a cloth store, even though he had been very interested in painting as a child. In 1845 he went to Paris , having previously married. From this marriage came his son Germain Théodule Clément Ribot (1845-1893), whom he later trained. In Paris he became a student of Auguste-Barthélémy Glaize . He initially earned his living by manufacturing and decorating handicrafts before he traveled to Algeria for an entrepreneur in 1848 to carry out some work for him. He stayed there until 1851. When he returned to Paris, he again took on odd jobs, making copies and decorations. He educated himself further by painting kitchen and genre scenes or still lifes in the light of a lamp at night . He was influenced by Jean Siméon Chardin .

When he presented some of his works in François Bonvin's studio , he received more attention. In 1861 he was allowed to take part in the Salon de Paris for the first time with a painting, which increased his fame and led to increased demand and several awards (1864, 1865 and 1878, additional admission to the Legio of Honor). In 1865 he began to turn to history painting with Saint Sebastian .

Ribot was known for highlighting the figures particularly brightly from the dark, similar to Jusepe de Ribera (1588–1656) and Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1573–1610). He skillfully used lighting effects in his painting.

Most of the works can be seen in the Musée municipal in Colombes, otherwise they are scattered internationally through museums, galleries and private collections.
