Saint-Omer ( Dutch Sint-Omaars) is a French municipality with 14,782 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Pas-de-Calais and the region Nord-Pas-de-Calais . Its inhabitants are called Audomarois . The city belonged to three cantons until 2015, it was the capital of the cantons of Saint-Omer-Nord and Saint-Omer-Sud , and also partially belonged to the canton of Arques , since then it has only belonged to the canton of Saint-Omer , of which it is the capital.
geography
The city is on the route from Lille to Boulogne-sur-Mer , south of Dunkirk and southeast of Calais . It is crossed by the river Aa , which was canalised below Saint-Omer towards the North Sea for shipping. The Canal de Neuffossé forms the continuation of this waterway to the southeast . Both are part of the large shipping route Dunkirk-Scheldt . The municipality is part of the Caps et Marais d'Opale Regional Nature Park .
economy
The economic life of Saint-Omer and its surroundings is characterized by agriculture. The reclamation of the marais audomarois allowed livestock and vegetable cultivation, and the area has also become a tourist attraction. Finally, Saint Omer is an important administrative and jurisdiction seat.

Attractions
Saint-Omer is - largely spared from the war - the best preserved city in the region.
- The Notre-Dame de Saint-Omer Cathedral (Church of Our Lady), originally a smaller chapel from the 7th century , was given its current size by an extension from the 13th to 16th centuries; in 1561, after Charles V had Thérouanne destroyed, it became a cathedral . It houses the Audomars cenotaph and a painting by Rubens showing the Descent from the Cross .
- The 13th century Gothic church of Saint-Denis ( Dionysius of Paris ) contains several tombs, including that of Guillaume Fillastre , Bishop of Tournai , Chancellor of the Order of the Golden Fleece , † 1473.
- The Saint-Sépulcre Church ( Holy Sepulcher ) was built in memory of three regional barons who took part in the Crusades .
- The Saint-Bertin Abbey was built between 1250 and 1520 and demolished by the municipality in 1830, so that only ruins can be seen today.
- The chapel of the former Jesuit college in the style of the Italian Renaissance was built between 1615 and 1640.
- The former Flemish- style episcopal seminary was built between 1605 and 1625.
- The present-day justice and former bishop's palace, built between 1680 and 1684 , was given its new purpose in 1795 during the French Revolution .
- The former hospital, built in 1702 on behalf of Louis-Alphonse de Valbelle , a Bishop of Saint-Omer appointed by Louis XIV , based on plans by Bernard Joseph de Neufville .

- The Bibliothèque Municipale contains rare manuscripts from the former St-Bertin Abbey, a Gutenberg Bible and a 2014 copy of the First Folio of the works of William Shakespeare
