Henri Luc (born January 6, 1855 in Saint-Omer , † September 25, 1925 in Paris ) was a French laryngologist . The Caldwell-Luc operation is named after him and George Walter Caldwell , who independently described the radical operation of the maxillary sinus after opening from the canine fossa . For decades it was the standard operation in maxillary sinus surgery.

Life

As a medical student at the Université Lille Nord de France , Henri Luc became a prosector in 1875 at the age of 20 . He continued his studies in Paris and received his doctorate in 1884. He then turned to ear, nose and throat medicine and went to Vienna for further studies under Adam Politzer and Leopold von Schrötter . Adam Politzer, the world's first professor of ear medicine, attracted large numbers of doctors for their postgraduate training .

research

He went back to Paris and started a practice. He researched the relationships between inflammation of the nose and ears and developed numerous surgical instruments. Luc was a pioneer in modern ear surgery.

One focus of his work was the treatment of maxillary sinusitis and inflammation of the frontal sinuses . He later went to London and in 1895 described an operative method for puncturing frontal sinuses with subsequent drainage to the nose via the ethmoid sinus . In 1894, Henri Luc published his Maxillary Sinus Technique. Luc is commonly referred to as the father of French otorhinology.
