A Caldwell-Luc operation (named after George Walter Caldwell and Henri Luc ) is a radical operation of the maxillary sinus , in which the entire maxillary sinus mucosa is removed in the case of chronic maxillary sinusitis that cannot be managed conservatively (maxillary sinusitis ). This previously common radical operation is no longer carried out so radically. The wall-mounted mucous membrane is left; only the polypoid central parts are removed. At the same time, a window to the lower nasal passage is created in the lateral nasal wall in order to achieve better drainage of pus and secretions from the maxillary sinus. From the lower nasal passage, a fold of the mucous membrane is folded into the maxillary sinus, allowing new mucosal epithelium to grow into the maxillary sinus.
