Guido Oppenheim
Guido Oppenheim (born May 28, 1862 in Luxembourg ; † August 26, 1942 in Theresienstadt concentration camp ) was a painter from Luxembourg.
Life
Oppenheim was born in Luxembourg as the son of a cloth merchant and was initially supposed to enter his father's business, but was supported by his family when he began studying painting . On October 14, 1890, he began studying with Karl Raupp , Munich Academy .
After graduation, he went to study in Paris and finally settled in 1902 as a freelance artist in his hometown, where he soon achieved success. Just four years later he received the Prix Grand-Duc Adolphe . His painterly work - he mainly painted portraits and landscapes from his Luxembourg homeland - is based on French impressionism .
At the age of eighty he was deported to Theresienstadt on July 28, 1942, where he died a month later.
A memorial plaque for Guido Oppenheim is in the new Jewish cemetery in Luxembourg at the grave site of the Oppenheim family.
