life and work

Paul Eduard Crodel first studied from 1882 to 1885 at the Grand Ducal Art School with Woldemar Friedrich and Theodor Hagen and then for three years at the Academy in Karlsruhe with Hermann Baisch . In 1888 he moved to Munich, where he exhibited regularly in the Glaspalast from 1890 and was a co-founder of the Munich Secession in 1892.

As an open-air painter, he first explored the northern suburbs of Munich : “When Bernhard Buttersack built and built his house in Haimhausen an der Amper, in the charming, intimate landscape of northern Munich, which had not yet been 'discovered' too long in terms of its picturesque possibilities Having established his household, he opened a kind of private academy there in the sense of the former Lierschule . Artists like Christian Landenberger , Otto Ubbelohde , Paul Crodel, Wilhelm Ludwig Lehmann became his students and testify for him through their works: everywhere you can feel, even if modified over time, in development and advancing into new territory, the breath of the Lier tradition as the art of intimate landscape portrayal, loving grasping and handling of the near and small, which is heightened by the medium of art in the meaningful and relevant. "

Then he explored the Alps, u. a. the Isny area . He spent the winter of 1907–1908 in Switzerland.

Image details that seem random and subdued coloring are typical of Crodel. He chose a broad, impasto application of paint.

In 1909 he was appointed to the commission of the Venice Biennale , where he himself exhibited in 1909 and 1910. In 1911 Paul Eduard Crodel was a member of the jury for the summer exhibition of the Munich Secession.

Paul Eduard Crodel was a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund , after he had already participated in the first joint exhibition with the Munich Secessionists in 1904 in the Kgl. Art exhibition building on Königsplatz with the painting Summer Day (Hessen) .
