He was also a master student of Hermann Baisch and Gustav Schönleber in Karlsruhe. The painter worked in Munich from 1884 to 1889 . Prince Regent Luitpold soon appointed him royal. Professor. Bernhard Buttersack: Dawn

At the end of 1889, attracted by the swampy areas of the outgoing Dachau moss with its marshy paths and huge ancient trees, the delicate windflowers, the heavy or serene clouds, the foehn sky and the isolated moss farming settlements (Lins 1998), he moved to Oberschleißheim and four Years later to Haimhausen , where he had a spacious house built with a painter's studio, surrounded by a large landscaped garden. He soon opened a private painting school and thus became the founder of the Haimhausen artists' colony . Well-known students of his were Franz Baum , Ludwig Bock and Paul Eduard Crodel .

Bernhard Buttersack suffered more and more from a difficult to define nerve problem. Little by little he lost pleasure in the beautiful surroundings and in the wonderful property. He complained about the frequent easterly wind in Haimhausen, which also detracts from the picturesque atmosphere.

In 1914 the painter moved to Icking. There he passed out of life voluntarily.

Some of his pictures are in the Dachau painting gallery .
