Georg Jakob Wolf

Georg Jakob Wolf (born February 8, 1882 in Munich , † November 6, 1936 in Murnau am Staffelsee ) was a German art historian , writer and journalist .

Life

Wolf was the son of the painter Josef Wolf and Maria Hessler . He studied from 1901 to 1906 at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich , the Bavarian and German history , art history , archeology and literature and later at the University of Padua .

After his doctorate as Dr. phil. In 1908, Wolf became an employee of Bruckmann Verlag , later of Velhagen & Klasing and Leipziger Illustrierte . He was also co-editor of the magazine Das Bayerland . As a writer, he was particularly successful with his book Ein Jahrhundert München, first published in 1919 . He was soon considered the chronicler of the Munich art scene.

Wolf published in the magazine Die Kunst für Alle , one of the most influential art periodicals of its time in terms of circulation and circulation area . He dealt particularly intensively with the romanticism and realism of the German 19th century and wrote books on Wilhelm Leibl , Karl Stauffer-Bern and Adolph von Menzel .

His Bavarica and Monacensia collection was cataloged and sold by the Lentner second-hand bookshop after his death .
