Woldemar Friedrich (born August 20, 1846 in Gnadau , † September 16, 1910 in Berlin ) was a German painter and illustrator. He was a member of the Willingshausen painters' colony .

Life

Friedrich trained with Carl Steffeck at the Art Academy in Berlin from 1863 and went to Weimar in 1865 , where he continued his studies with Arthur von Ramberg , Charles Verlat and Bernhard Plockhorst . During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and 1871, he also worked as a draftsman, especially for the Daheim magazine, and provided the illustrations for Georg Hiltl's work on the Franco-German War. After a trip to Italy, he returned to Weimar in 1873, where he partly worked as an illustrator, partly executed decorative paintings (including in Hummelshain Castle ) and also painted some genre pictures. In 1881 he became a professor at the art school in Weimar .

In 1885 he was appointed to teach the subject of life drawing at the art academy in Berlin, where in the following year he showed his talent for monumental painting by painting the dome in the state exhibition building . In 1886 he received the Small Golden Medal of the Berlin Art Exhibition, trained Fritz Grotemeyer as a studio student from 1887 and then went on a trip to India , the fruits of which, in addition to a series of watercolors and paintings, the illustrations for the work Six Months in India (Leipzig 1893, with Text by E. von Leipziger).

Of his later decorative paintings are the Reichstag in Worms in the auditorium of the high school in Wittenberg , the allegorical paintings in the bookseller's house in Leipzig ( art and science, book trade and book printing ) and a mural for the Niederbarnim district house in Berlin when the citizens of Bernau return after the defeat of the Hussites in April 1432 . Woldemar Friedrich was a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts.

From 1898 on, Woldemar Friedrich was a member of the jury on behalf of Ludwig Stollwerck to evaluate designs from competitions for Stollwerck collector's pictures and albums. Other judges were Professors Franz Skarbina , Emil Doepler the Elder . J. and Bruno Schmitz from Berlin and a partner in the Stollwerck company.

Woldemar Friedrich died in Berlin at the age of 64. He was buried on September 20, 1910 in the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Cemetery in Charlottenburg - Westend . The grave has not been preserved.
