Wilhelm Ludwig Lehmann
Wilhelm Ludwig Lehmann (born March 7, 1861 in Zurich ; † March 9, 1932 there ) was a Swiss landscape painter .
Life
Wilhelm Ludwig Lehmann was one of the sons of the Swiss doctor Friedrich Lehmann (1825–1905) from Frankenthal (Palatinate ) and his wife Friederike, nee. Spatz, daughter of the architect Johann Bernhard Spatz . He first studied architecture at the Polytechnic in Zurich from 1879 to 1883 and worked for a time as a construction manager before turning to painting. He studied painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris , at the Grand Ducal Baden Art School in Karlsruhe and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich .
Lehmann, who was friends with Arnold Böcklin , became a member of the Munich Secession and was its secretary in 1906. From 1901 to 1903 he was a member of the Federal Art Commission and in 1903 its vice-president. His reputation as an artist is documented by numerous public commissions for paintings and decorations in public buildings in Switzerland. From 1923 to 1931 he taught architecture and landscape painting at the ETH Zurich .
In addition to his numerous landscapes in Switzerland, mainly landscapes from northern France (1895–1899), from the Fraueninsel in the Chiemsee (1903–1905) and on the island of Sylt (1926–1928) were created due to long journeys . As an author, he wrote the biography of his Zurich architecture professor Ernst Georg Gladbach and other biographies of artist colleagues such as Konrad Grob , Richard Kissling , Rudolf Koller , Adolf Stäbli and Albert Welti . The painter Adolf Kleemann was his son-in-law. The bacteriologist Karl Bernhard Lehmann and the publisher Julius Friedrich Lehmann were his brothers.
