The townhouse of the city of Zurich is located on the Stadthausquai in the old town .

The building, originally only planned as a temporary solution, was executed in two stages (1883/1884 and from 1898 to 1900) by Gustav Gull , who was appointed city architect in 1895. The location was a gusset between the old town house building and the Fraumünster . In the course of this new building, among other things, the medieval Kratzquartier gave way to the French-influenced urban planning visions for a “Greater Zurich”. The town house has meanwhile become an important building and architectural monument in Zurich and testifies to the changing awareness of Zurich in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century.

Around 300 employees of the presidential department work in the town hall - including the service departments of the Population Office, Culture, Urban Development and the Specialized Office for Equal Opportunities - of the finance department and the city chancellery. Every Wednesday morning, the Zurich government, the city council, meets in the town hall. The town house is the seat of the mayor and her staff, the town clerk (head of the town chancellery) and the legal adviser. The public area of the town hall is used for changing exhibitions and various city events.

In 2007–2010 the town house was completely renovated for the first time and the rooms were adapted to the needs of users and the new functional requirements. Among other things, the entire building technology was renewed and the former main entrance on Kappelergasse was reopened. During the construction work, wall paintings, terrazzo floors and reliefs that had previously been covered came to light. The atrium "was given back its former elegance in the style of the Italian neo-renaissance ", as stated in a message from the city administration. The total renovation cost was 59.5 million Swiss francs.
